History:

Carmel Elementary School, originally known as Chapman Elementary School, opened in March of 1974. It was built on land originally owned by the Chapman family in southern Cherokee County. Due to the rapid growth in the Towne Lake Area, this once rural farmland had become a thriving suburban community in need of new elementary school.

In the spring of 1999, the Cherokee County School Board, under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Frank Petruzielo, voted to move the school in its entirety to a new site on Bascomb Carmel Road approximately 1.3 miles from the original site. Cherokee County School District bought the Yellow Rose Quarter Horse Farm to begin construction on the new school. The name Carmel is derived from the location of Bascomb Carmel Road. The mascot, the colt, came from the property’s horse farm beginnings. On Monday, February 21, 2000, the entire student body, faculty and staff moved to the new location. Since that time, Carmel has changed from a K-6 school to a K-5 school, with the 6th graders moving to Woodstock Middle School.
